Phelps

Two days after Cascade and Porter, the day after Wright, Agonquin, and Iroquois, we continued our 46er journey. The original plan was to hike Phelps and Tabletop but we were incredibly sore and my feet were covered in blisters. Kyle had to push me pretty hard because I was done after the first two days. Eventually we agreed to do just Phelps on our third day. Again we stayed at the Loj. I barely made it to the car that morning, my blisters were screaming. I tried adding a second pair of socks but that wasn't helpful. So I stuffed some gauze in my heels and felt like a new woman.

The trailhead for Phelps starts at the same place as Wright, Algonquin, Iroquois trail (WAI), at the Adirondack Loj. It took me a while to crawl out of that comfy bed so we didn't get to the trailhead until 0700, but that's one benefit of staying here, you don't have to rush in the morning to ensure that you get a parking spot. You'll hike the same first mile as you would with WAI before you come to that split. Right to get to WAI, left to Indian head and Mt Marcy, head this way. You'll continue for 2.5 ish more flat miles and then you'll see this sign. You're going to go left again towards Phelps, the easy part is over, and you're going to go straight up until you reach the peak.

We got to the summit at 0940. There were a few beautiful spots to stop when you get close. And then you walk over mostly flat ground and feel like you're winding through a maze until you reach the actual summit. This peak is one of my favorites, it was our sixth.

The views were totally worth the hike, I'm glad Kyle made me do it. We took our time hiking back down. It took us about 5.5 hours, we probably would have been a lot quicker normally. I felt like we were moving at a snails pace, but that's probably just because our bodies were sore, we had a 34'48" minute mile pace.

Many people do this peak with Tabletop, but again, we were just not up for it. But that's fine, we can do Tabletop another day with Colden. That's what's great about the 46ers, there's a bunch of peaks that can be combined into a single day hike.
